Tired of boring buttercream frosting and sheet cakes for those birthday parties and celebrations? Bring more flavor and fun to your next big event by using this Emoji "Surprise" Cake recipe.
This is not your typical quickly-baked cake recipe, but the results are worth the effort.
When baking the yellow portions of your cake, add in yellow food coloring for a more vibrant center. You can also add black food coloring to the chocolate portion of your cake to make a darker section.
After yellow cakes are baked, you will place in the freezer for at least an hour.
Once you have mixed your butter and Solo Marshmallow Creme, you will add in your other dry ingredients before crumbling your devil’s food cake. After mixing everything together, this dark batter will go into a pastry bag with a round tip.
Now you can remove the yellow cakes from the freezer and cut them into 5-inch circles. Next, using emoji cookie cutters or similar instruments, carefully cut out eyes and a mouth on each round cake.
The next part of the process will basically be stacking your round parts of the cake up after filling them with the chocolate center. To do this, you will place a round cake on a piece of parchment paper. Using the pastry bag, fill the holes for the eyes and mouth with the chocolate filling. Place another round cake on top of the first and fill with the chocolate filling. Continue until all of the round cakes have been used.
After several of the layers have been placed, you will want to wrap parchment paper around the outside of the cake to prevent it from bulging due to weight. You will then place it in the freezer for at least 4 hours, or overnight, if you have the time.
Once frozen, carefully remove the parchment paper from the outside of the cake. Start applying a thin layer of frosting, and then place the cake on a serving tray, on its side. You will want to make sure the “face” of the cake is not upside down. Return your cake to the freezer for an hour.
Remove the cake from the freezer and apply the rest of the frosting. Add sprinkles or other decorations if desired. For best results, store the finished cake in the freezer until ready to serve.
This cake is both delicious and kid-friendly, and you can use the recipe to create whatever emoji or center you’d like. Enjoy!
