decorating desserts with flowers

It's June! Spring is winding down and the flowers are extra-gorgeous right now. The floral smell and pretty colors can make anyone’s day. So why not add them into your next baking project? Fresh flowers may seem difficult to use in your flour-based desserts, but it’s much easier than you think!

To show you how it easy it is, here are a few tips to help you on your way to using fresh flowers to decorate any dessert you plan to make!

Fresh Flower Tip #1

Worried about sanitation? Florists can help you pick out which flowers are perfectly safe to use and which are not. Your florist can also make flower arrangements that you can place between tiers of a cake or you can put them on the base of the cake if you are still worried about the flowers touching your cake.

Fresh Flower Tip #2

Do not use flowers from an arrangement you buy from a store, especially if they come from a vase where the water has been able to build bacteria.

Fresh Flower Tip #3

Use fondant as a setting for your fresh flowers. This video shows you how!

Fresh Flower Tip #4

If you are not looking to go to a florist for advice on which flowers to use, here is a list of 42 flowers you can eat!

Fresh Flower Tip #5

If your cake will be outside for a considerable amount of time, you may want to consider crystallizing your flowers in sugar. Here is how to make sugared flowers.

Fresh Flower Tip #6

Petal confetti is a pretty and very easy way to beautify your cake! This Flowerfetti Cake is one of our favorites.

Fresh Flower Tip #7

Make sure to use organic flowers when buying them from a florist to avoid any sprays contaminating your cake. The best way to avoid this is using flowers from your own garden! It also puts a personal touch on your dessert you couldn’t get anywhere else.

Fresh Flower Tip #8

Mix your flowers into the cake’s icing like this Rose Cake by Gimme Some Oven.

Fresh Flower Tip #9

If you use edible flowers, some of their petals are very soft which end up absorbing the fat from the icing you use. The best way to avoid this is by making sure to put the flowers on immediately before the cake will be shown/eaten.

Fresh Flower Tip #10

Fresh herbs can be an interesting contrast to other flowers you may want to put on your cakes. Try fresh mint or rosemary for a pretty, fragrant topping.

Fresh Flower Tip #11

Keep flowers fresh on your cake by using flower holders you can buy at a bakery supply store or make your own by using straws.
