Whoopie Pies: Cake? Cookie? Pie? Oh my!

Thursday, February 9, 2012 - 8:45am

whoopie piesWhat’s a Whoopie Pie, you say? I’m happy you asked! Whoopie Pies are sandwiches made from cake batter cookies and a sweet filling! See the controversy? What do you think? Are Whoopie Pies a cake, a cookie, or a pie?

Whatever you decide, Whoopie Pies are a lot of fun to make and even more fun to EAT! They are perfect whether it’s cold outside and you’re looking for something to snack on with your hot cocoa, or you’ve just come in from the pool on a summer day. These sweet sandwiches keep well and are easy to grab when you’re on the go. They can be individually wrapped in plastic wrap and stuck in the freezer! Nothing is better on a summer day than a cold, sweet treat! You could even stick them in a child’s lunch box!! It’s rumored that’s how Whoopie Pies got their fun name… women would put them in their husband’s lunches and when they saw them, they shouted “WHOOPIE!”

Whoopie Pies are wonderful because they take less than an hour to make from scratch! Our recipe for Whoopie Pies is a great tool with easy to follow instructions. Just 12 ingredients!! The great thing about this recipe is that you should have most everything around the house, except for maybe the marshmallow creme, which you can find on the our website or in stores like HyVee, Jewel-Osco, Safeway, Meijer, and many others! whoopie pie cake mixIf you don’t have time to make the Whoopie Pies from scratch, Solo Foods provides boxed Whoopie Do! baking mixes! We have original flavor whoopie pies (chocolate cake cookies with marshmallow creme) and s’mores flavor whoopee pies (chocolate cake cookies with marshmallow creme and graham crumbles), YUM! The dry ingredients are already in the box and it includes the creme filling! Just assemble and bake the cake cookies, let cool, and sandwich the cookies with the filling!

Another great thing about Whoopie Pies is that you can make them anytime, for any occasion. For a twist, you could frost the tops of these for special occasions like birthday parties, Halloween, Easter, Hanukah, Christmas, and more! There are a lot of web/sites that provide many great cookie decorating ideas! It would even be fun to get children involved in making these by letting them decorate the tops however they want—have a cookie party! You could even add a few drops of food coloring, flavoring, or crushed candies to the frosting. My personal favorite would be chocolate cake cookies with mint flavoring and crushed Andes mints in the filling! MMMM!

Whether it’s a lazy afternoon at home, a Super Bowl party, or a family reunion, Whoopie Pies are a great snack or dessert! It’s hard not to love the variability and easiness! You can dress them up or down as much as you like to make them appropriate for any occasion! Try them yourself, and you’ll be saying “WHOOPIE!”
