Apple Turnovers Recipe

With so many grocery and convenience stores today, it isn't hard to find a snack that you have been craving like donuts, pastries, cakes and pies. We have access to just about anything pre-made and ready to serve, but we also know that these products never quite taste the same as they do when we make them in our own homes with the people we love. Instead of buying the pretty packaging that could result in less-than-satisfying taste, opt for quick and easy homemade recipes that will allow you to spend more time with family and have great tasting goodies!!

Solo Foods has many quick and easy baking recipes on our website -- one of which is the recipe for apple turnovers! These little pocket-pies are fantastic for those who have the craving for pie but not the means or time to make one! And with just seven easy-to-find ingredients, it’s very easy to bake!

First, you roll out your pastry filling and cut it into five-inch circles. A standard cookie cutter is too small to make circles of this size, oh no!! As an alternative you could use a small bowl or the top of an old oatmeal canister as a template if needed... just be creative! When you prepare the filling, make sure that your apple pie filling, lemon peel, cinnamon, and raisins (optional) are well mixed and thoroughly distributed and then simply place a spoonful of the filling slightly of center on your circular dough forms! Fold the dough over the filling to create a pocket and seal the edge with a little layer of milk and by pressing the edges with a fork. You can get as fancy or as simple as you want with the edges. Do a simple pattern with one set of ridges, or layer them to create stitch-like patterns, X's, or stars. Now you just bake, sprinkle with sugar, and let cool! The whole process can be done in just 40 minutes!!

Turnovers are great because of their variety and they can be eaten at any time of day! Turnovers can be made with any type of filling that you prefer! If you don't care for apple, or something else would be more fitting following your dinner, just substitute the apple pie filling for a different flavor! We have many options of pie fillings! Blueberry, cherry and peach just to name a few. The fruit in these mini-pies make them great for breakfasts on the go or with a cup of coffee. The sweetness of the filling and flakiness of the casing make turnovers delicious when warmed up and served á la mode (topped with ice cream) after dinner, as well! For an extra bit of sweetness (as if you could possibly need any more) try topping these turnovers with a really simple glaze like this one:

1)      Mix 2 cups confectioners' sugar, 2 tablespoons of butter (softened), and 1 teaspoon of vanilla

2)      Slowly stir in 1 tablespoon of milk (or orange juice)

3)      Pour over pastry immediately. Will harden as it cools.

As you can see, turnovers are super sweet and yummy to eat! You can't beat the 40 minutes it takes to completely make these when you are in the mood for warm homemade pie. While apple may be the most popular, there are many ways to customize turnovers to make them fit your family's taste buds! If you don't believe us, try them for yourself!
